Since the launch of the national-level 'Water Cellar for Mothers' project in Lezhi County, in southwest China's Sichuan Province in 2002, more than 50,000 residents in the county have benefited from the project (most recent data is from July 2013.)

By July 2013, more than 2.841 million yuan (US$463,651) has been allocated to the project by the China Women's Development Foundation (CWDF). These funds have been put into both infrastructure construction projects for safe drinking water, and training programs aimed at educating people about safe drinking water. The project was rolled out in six townships in the county, including Gaosi Township and Quansheng Township.

The 'Water Cellar for Mothers' project is a public-charity project carried out by the China Women's Development Foundation under the guidance of the All-China Women's Federation to help alleviate poverty and the shortage of available drinking water, and to benefit people in poverty-stricken areas of west China by supplying safe water.
